The GATA is an organization committed to education of its members and enhancement of the profession of athletic training, leading to better healthcare for the population which it serves. The GATA is proudly composed of licensed athletic trainers in many different settings. Over 1000 licensed athletic trainers from professional, collegiate, and high school teams to industries, physician offices, military bases, and rehabilitation clinics all work together to promote and practice the profession of athletic training within the state of Georgia.

This course will provide an in-depth focus on how to examine a patient for exertional heat stroke (EHS). This will include differential diagnosis from other conditions that could present as EHS, central nervous system dysfunction assessment, and body temperature assessment. Body temperature assessment will focus predominately on the use of rectal thermometry; including policy development, implementation, and specific clinical setting barriers with solutions. Learn more
This course is designed to give the physical therapist a fundamental understanding of strength and conditioning. Susan Falsone will review basic muscle physiology and energy systems and apply metabolic and structural adaptations to both aerobic and anaerobic exercise training. Multiple demonstrations and lectures will thoroughly explore testing modalities for aerobic capacity, strength, power and agility. The participant will learn how to design and implement physiologically based aerobic and anaerobic training programs. Learn more

Concussion is an ongoing public health initiative, due to high prevalence and potentially serious long-term consequences that may arise from incomplete recovery and improper management. Concussion often results in a multitude of symptoms, deficits in cognitive function and impairment in the vestibular and visual systems. Effective management employs a multidisciplinary team approach in which these various deficits areas can be assessed and treated. This course will review the pathophysiology, epidemiology and biomechanics of concussion, along with pertinent information regarding diagnosis and negative outcomes following this injury. Current guidelines with respect to return to play will also be discussed. The course will finish with a case study example. Learn more

Dr. Susan Yeargin’s course on exertional heat illnesses covers exercise-associated muscle cramps, Exertional Heat Exhaustion, Sickling, and Exertional Heat Stroke. It is designed to highlight key items in each of the following domains for both the experienced and novice health care clinician. Etiology along with clinical history items is provided for the recognition of each condition followed by immediate evidence-based treatments. Known risk factors are presented in conjunction with prevention interventions for each condition. Lastly, general guidelines for return to activity are given. Throughout the course, common mythology is addressed, research support provided, and practical applications offered.
