There is strong evidence to support prevention programs as an effective means to reduce ACL injury risk. Yet, the incidence of ACL injuries and reconstructions has continued to rise among youth athletes in cutting sports. Through a review of current best evidence, participants will leave this course with a thorough understanding of the importance of ACL injury prevention, including the economic, health, and emotional impact of ACL injuries in young athletes. Participants in this course will be able to describe the value of an ACL injury prevention program in the enhancement of youth athletes’ performance and quality of life through injury risk reduction provided through a dynamic warmup program. The program is designed to train athletes in more efficient and sport-specific movement patterns for improved motor control.
The applicable audience for this course includes physicians, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and coaches who work with youth sports at high risk for ACL injuries. The setting for this course is a classroom, office, or practice facility.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. ACL Injuries in Youth Sports: Incidence, Mechanism, and Impact
Chapter 1 focuses on identifying the economic, health, and emotional impact of ACL injuries on youth athletes. We will cover the mechanisms of injury for ACL injuries in youth sports and identify the significant risk factors for ACL injuries in young athletes. The chapter also includes statistics on the incidence and prevalence of these injuries and a brief review of ligament anatomy.
2. Exercise-Based Prevention Programs: Review of the Evidence
Chapter 2 emphasizes a review of existing prevention programs and common program components. We will examine the basis for program exercise selection, including the critical principles and effectiveness of ACL injury prevention programs as well as the goals of these programs. A brief introduction to the Seattle Pediatric Sports Medicine ACL Injury Prevention and Performance Enhancement Program will also be included.
