Practitioners have heard about motivational interviewing, providing autonomy, and therapeutic alliance. This three-course series will provide a side-by-side demonstration of the how to complement the why. Course 1 is focused on the initial examination and interview from the perspective of a nurse, therapist, mental health provider, athletic trainer, or personal trainer. This teaches you how to leverage the soft skills with practical everyday clinical tools, phrases, approaches, and techniques and puts you and the person in front of you in a position to succeed!

In this chapter, we will both introduce and define the soft skills and explain how this course will help practitioners apply/translate concepts.

2. Prioritizing Person Before Patient

In this chapter, attendees will see how to apply the soft skills in creating an initial examination that maximizes the patient experience and engagement opportunities. We will learn about past, preferences, and personality.

3. What Are This Person’s Preferences?

In this chapter, attendees will see how to apply the soft skills in creating a rehabilitative diagnosis, implementing a plan with the person, and establishing accountability.
