This course will be retired and no longer available as of December 31, 2024. Please complete the course by December 31, 2024, to receive credit. In this course, participants will explore evidence-based intervention strategies and activities for children with language delays working on single words, phrases, and simple sentences. We will discuss the continuum from child-directed to adult-directed strategies with an emphasis on blended models integrating the best of both (i.e., focused language stimulation, enhanced milieu teaching). The benefit of routines, themes, and books will be explored. Live demonstrations will be included.

In this chapter, we will review general components of therapy (i.e., planning choosing goals, choosing and implementing procedures, and providing rationales) with a focus on evidence-based practice.

In this chapter, the continuum of child-directed to adult-directed strategies will be presented with an emphasis on blended approaches, that is, focused language stimulation and enhanced milieu teaching. Demonstrations will be provided.

In addition to choosing goals and therapeutic strategies, the SLP needs to choose activities. In this chapter, we will discuss general principles for choosing materials/activities. This chapter concludes with sample therapy demonstration using a picture book.
