1. Introduction to Patient Activation and Motivational Interviewing
Motivational interviewing (MI) is a collaborative conversation to strengthen a person’s own motivation and commitment to change. This chapter introduces the learner to the three elements of behavior change, the four steps of MI, and the four strategies of MI. The chapter includes two provider-patient videos regarding ineffective guidance and effective guidance.
2. The Unmotivated Patient
Traditional healthcare focuses on patients at a deficit. Well-meaning providers focus on fixing the problem instead of understanding the motivation that leads to unhealthy behaviors. This chapter will focus on the effectiveness of empathic statements to build patient engagement. This chapter includes a video that demonstrates competent practice.
3. Family Matters: Partnering With a Patient’s Family
Family members represent an important influence on a patient’s life (positive, negative, or neutral). Family members are often marginalized or overlooked in the provider-patient dynamic. A provider can employ an MI approach to promote confidence in family members and increase their collaboration.
