This course, with Dr. Stephanie Daniels, reviews the components of the clinical swallowing examination (CSE), with a particular focus on the cranial nerve assessment. Participants will review how the CSE fits into the overall schema of swallowing evaluation, and the key findings and recommendations that are addressed by the CSE. This information includes steps for collecting background on patient history, knowledge of communication and cognition, and determinants of swallowing function.

Clinical Swallowing Evaluation Overview

1. Clinical Swallowing Evaluation Overview

In the first chapter of this course, Dr. Stephanie Daniels will describe the purpose of the clinical swallowing examination (CSE), and differentiate it from the simple swallowing screen for persons with suspected stroke.

Patient History and Interview

2. Patient History and Interview

The second chapter of this course will take a closer look at the patient history collection process, including how to successfully interview the patient and glean useful and informative data.

Cognition and Communication

3. Cognition and Communication

In the third chapter of this course, Dr. Stephanie Daniels will elaborate on how to assess cognition and language function in patients with suspected stroke.

Cranial Nerve Evaluation

4. Cranial Nerve Evaluation

In this chapter, the cranial nerve evaluation will be discussed, including the specific innervation of motor and sensory functions, and the implications for impaired innervation on function.

Swallowing Evaluation Protocol

5. Swallowing Evaluation Protocol

In this chapter, Dr. Stephanie Daniels will review a specific swallowing evaluation protocol for speech language pathologists, and outlines key considerations for its use in cases of acute stroke.

Interpreting Results

6. Interpreting Results

In the final lecture component of this course, Dr. Stephanie Daniels will review key considerations for interpreting the results of the CSE, putting together all of the information from the previous chapters of this course.

Clinical Swallowing Evaluation Case Example

7. Clinical Swallowing Evaluation Case Example

In the final chapter of this course, Dr. Stephanie Daniels shows specific aspects of the CSE with an actual patient, demonstrating concepts from throughout the course.
