Dr. Daniels received her Ph.D. from Louisiana State University. She is a research speech pathologist at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. Dr. Daniels is a Board Recognized Specialist in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders. Her research, funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs, is focused on neurogenic dysphagia.…
Chapters & learning objectives
1. Clinical Swallowing Evaluation Overview
In the first chapter of this course, Dr. Stephanie Daniels will describe the purpose of the clinical swallowing examination (CSE), and differentiate it from the simple swallowing screen for persons with suspected stroke.
2. Patient History and Interview
The second chapter of this course will take a closer look at the patient history collection process, including how to successfully interview the patient and glean useful and informative data.
3. Cognition and Communication
In the third chapter of this course, Dr. Stephanie Daniels will elaborate on how to assess cognition and language function in patients with suspected stroke.
4. Cranial Nerve Evaluation
In this chapter, the cranial nerve evaluation will be discussed, including the specific innervation of motor and sensory functions, and the implications for impaired innervation on function.
5. Swallowing Evaluation Protocol
In this chapter, Dr. Stephanie Daniels will review a specific swallowing evaluation protocol for speech language pathologists, and outlines key considerations for its use in cases of acute stroke.
6. Interpreting Results
In the final lecture component of this course, Dr. Stephanie Daniels will review key considerations for interpreting the results of the CSE, putting together all of the information from the previous chapters of this course.
7. Clinical Swallowing Evaluation Case Example
In the final chapter of this course, Dr. Stephanie Daniels shows specific aspects of the CSE with an actual patient, demonstrating concepts from throughout the course.
