1. Pathophysiology Review: Diabetes and Exercise
Diabetes is a heterogenous disease, with hyperglycemia as its central feature. In the insulin-deficient state, there are fundamental changes in fuel utilization and blood sugar control depending on the form of exercise. Key differences are seen in aerobic versus anaerobic athletes.
2. Acute and Chronic Complications: Assessment and Management Strategies
Using the American Diabetes Association standards of practice, the prevention and management of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia will be reviewed, and contraindications for participation will be discussed. Appropriate dietary guidelines will be highlighted.
3. What Motivates Your Athlete?
A clinical understanding of type 1 diabetes is essential in the provision of care, and the educational needs and motivation of the athlete are fundamental to successful outcomes. What motivates your athlete?
