Huntington’s disease is a genetic disorder resulting in complex issues impacting health, function, and participation. Therapists must be equipped to provide care in an ever-changing health care environment. This course provides the therapist with advanced knowledge in examination of the client across all stages of Huntington’s disease. Information is presented using a case study example interwoven with evidence-based information. On completion of this course, the therapist will be able to use evidence-based tests and measures for the examination of clients with Huntington’s across the full spectrum of the disease.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Huntington’s Disease: Etiology, Symptoms, and Treatments
Huntington’s disease (HD) is a fatal genetic disorder that causes damage to many areas of the brain, and especially the striatum. Therapists must be able to recognize the common motor, cognitive, and psychiatric symptoms of HD throughout all stages of the disease. This chapter provides the therapist advanced knowledge about the etiology, symptoms, diagnosis, prognosis, and medical treatment of clients with HD and how they impact physical therapy care.
2. Examination and Assessment
Appropriate care of the client with Huntington’s disease is based on a thorough and accurate examination. This chapter prepares the therapist to select and use appropriate examination techniques, including the selection of outcome measures across all stages of the disease.
3. PT Examination Across the Course of the Disease: Case Study
In this chapter, knowledge gained about current best practice for physical therapy examination of a client with HD will be applied to a case study. Rationale for selection of examination outcome measures across all of the disease stages will be presented.
