Navigating the complexities of idiopathic toe walking can leave practitioners feeling confused or without direction. This diagnosis often triggers frustration among everyone involved, leading to inaccurate assessments, ineffective interventions, and poor achievement of results. This webinar will look deeper into the repercussions of delayed and misguided interventions, as well as the evidence around toe walking and optimal gait dynamics. Through an exploration of evidence-based insights, practitioners will gain a novel and impactful approach to addressing pediatric toe walking. Participants will uncover the critical importance of timely and precise management of pediatric toe walking, as well as the ability to discern when a child’s biomechanics or sensory functions are hindering their gait.
Learning Objectives
- Determine the outcomes of delayed intervention from a dynamic systems approach
- Determine the necessity of timely and accurate management of pediatric toe walking
- Examine the evidence related to toe walking and ideal gait
- Apply research findings from a clinical perspective
- Use correct biomechanics to better understand stability during ambulation
- Determine when a child has impaired biomechanics and/or sensory function that is negatively affecting their gait and participation in play or daily occupations

Chapters & learning objectives
1. The Consequences of “Wait and See”
Dr. Ritchie explains the outcomes of delayed intervention for toe walking from a dynamic systems approach. Participants will learn to identify the ramifications of incorrect interventions and will come to appreciate the necessity of timely and accurate management of pediatric toe walking.
2. Application of Research Findings
Information regarding toe walking is only beneficial if we know how to use it. In this chapter, Liesa describes evidence related to toe walking and ideal gait, after which she applies research findings from a clinical perspective to educate participants on effective diagnosis and intervention strategies.
3. More Than Muscles: Biomechanics and Sensory Systems
This chapter enables participants to understand and utilize the correct biomechanics to better understand stability during ambulation. Join Liesa to gain insight into the contributions of the sensory systems during gait, and learn to recognize when a child has impaired biomechanics and/or sensory function that is negatively affecting their gait pattern.
4. Question and Answer Session
This chapter is a viewer-submitted question and answer session facilitated by the instructor.
