This course will discuss sensory system dysfunction and how this impacts success in childhood occupations such as sleeping, eating, hygiene, and playing for children with High Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (HFASD). Current research will be examined in order to determine effective evidence based interventions for children with HFASD. Learners will glean information for practical strategies addressing activities of daily living for HFASD. Sensory simulations will help participants understand the struggles children with HFASD experience, and case examples will be utilized to enrich the learning experience.

Chapters & learning objectives

Diagnosis, Etiology and Neurological Requisites

1. Diagnosis, Etiology and Neurological Requisites

In the first chapter of this course, instructor Jenny L. Clark discusses the evolution of diagnosis from Asperger Syndrome to HFASD. Participants will learn the functions of the sensory systems and experience sensory processing challenges through simulated activities.

Sensory Components

2. Sensory Components

Jenny L. Clark reviews the seven sensory systems. The explanation of each sensory system is followed by a simulation activity to illustrate their functions and characteristics.

Diagnosis, Etiology, and Sensory Challenges

3. Diagnosis, Etiology, and Sensory Challenges

In this chapter, participants will discern sensory symptoms in HFASD with evidential support and scrutinize the impact of sensory processing difficulties on childhood occupations for children with HFASD. This chapter also provides an overview of how occupational therapy is utilized when working with children with ASD.

Interventions at School

4. Interventions at School

Participants will explore problem-solving approaches for helping children with HFASD at school and in the community. They will develop a repertoire of strategies that address success in childhood occupations for children with HFASD. Jenny L. Clark demonstrates how to implement sensory techniques to help children with HFASD gain independence in activities of daily living.

Interventions at Home

5. Interventions at Home

In the final chapter of this course, participants will review problem-solving approaches for helping children with HFASD at home. They will develop a repertoire of strategies that address success in childhood occupations for children with HFASD, and will understand how to facilitate solutions for functional independence for children with HFASD.
