This course will focus on current trends in the treatment of cognitive-communication disorders in pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI), and identify evidence-based approaches for treatment in the population. Following an introduction to basic EBP principles in cognitive rehabilitation, the course will identify treatment recommendations for specific cognitive-communication deficits. The course will then discuss simple and immediate ways that you can update your clinical practice to include evidenced-based approaches and will conclude with an interview with a family that focuses on their treatment experience with their 7 year old son’s brain injury.

1. Introduction

In Chapter 1, trends in the treatment of pediatric TBI will be reviewed and the areas of needed improvement within these trends will be highlighted. This information provides a foundation for the discussion of evidence-based (EBP) treatment approaches that can be implemented in order to help the individual client as well as address areas for improvement in treatment.

2. Evidence-Based Practice in the Treatment of Cognitive-Communication Deficits after Pediatric TBI

In Chapter 2, basic EBP principles in cognitive rehabilitation generally, and types of cognitive and cognitive-communication treatment approaches specifically, will be reviewed. This will be complimented with recommendations for the application of these principles across different treatment environments and different points in the recovery process. The use of EBP treatment approaches is critical to providing the best possible services to this population.

In Chapter 3, steps that can be taken to improve the use of EBP treatment approaches in pediatric TBI will be reviewed. This Chapter provides simple action steps that can be put into action in both the short-term and long-term to ensure that clinical practices are provided.

In this Chapter, Dr. Ciccia will talk with a 10-year boy and his mother regarding his experience with support for cognitive-communication concerns following the boy's acquired brain injury 3 years prior. The patient and family will talk about what they felt was most helpful and where they experienced frustration in their treatment journey.
