In this course, Dr. Arnold walks through four case studies dealing with concussion. In the case studies, Dr. Arnold demonstrates how to gather pertinent information from the athlete, identifies which assessments are appropriate to use in the clinic and on the sidelines, and emphasizes the clinical reasoning behind his treatment approach. Each case will cover a variety of issues that will enhance the learning from the lecture-style courses covering the concussed athlete, offering a deeper understanding of situations that arise and a platform for generating one's own style for communicating to those injured, as well as their parents and coaches. This updated case-based course is aimed at preparing physical therapists for the Sports Certified Specialist advanced certification exam but is appropriate for any therapist looking to expand their knowledge of concussion in sport.

Chapters & learning objectives

Case Study #1

1. Case Study #1

This is a case that many of us will face as sports clinicians: a sideline evaluation of a potential head injury and making a game-day decision.

Case Study #2

2. Case Study #2

This case evaluates an athlete with a unique pattern of symptoms related to a concussion and highlights the variety of symptoms related to mild traumatic brain injuries.

Case Study #3

3. Case Study #3

This is a brief sit-down with an athlete, which serves as an education for the injured athlete. These examples can be used in clinical practice when similar questions are brought up.

Case Study #4

4. Case Study #4

A final case serves as a platform of education that is given to athletes with a head injury. It also reviews some vestibulo-ocular dysfunction. This can be used in clinical practice for sports practitioners.
