Though it does not receive the same attention as its lateral-sided counterpart, medial elbow pathology can be difficult to treat as it can stem from a variety of etiologies. This course unpacks the anatomy of the medial elbow to understand what structures could be involved. It then delves into how to complete a systematic exam of the elbow, including special tests for differential diagnosis. The course then tackles interpreting the exam findings to develop a treatment plan. Comprehensive treatment will be discussed for musculotendinous issues, capsuloligamentous issues, and cubital tunnel syndrome. This course is designed for occupational therapists and physical therapists who treat elbow conditions.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Anatomy and Mechanics of the Elbow: Medial Side
This chapter explores the bony, ligamentous, and other soft-tissue anatomy at the medial side of the elbow. Understanding the anatomy sets the stage for how to best evaluate the elbow.
2. Assessment of Medial Elbow Pathology
This chapter describes the main components of a systematic elbow evaluation. This includes obtaining a detailed history and understanding personal factors, assessing passive mobility to determine if a capsular pattern is present, and completing resistance testing.
3. Special Tests: Medial Elbow Pain
This chapter will build upon the basic clinical assessment by outlining and demonstrating the special tests that may be needed to conclude your exam, complete differential diagnosis, and improve your confidence in your findings.
4. Treatment: Musculotendinous Issue
This chapter focuses on the treatment techniques used for addressing a problem at the medial musculotendinous unit, including supporting the body’s healing process, activity modification, controlled loading, and addressing the kinetic chain.
5. Treatment: Capsuloligamentous Issues
This chapter unravels the treatment of issues at the medial collateral ligament. The spectrum of instability is explored, as well as treatment principles to follow both conservatively and postoperatively.
6. Treatment of Cubital Tunnel
The final chapter discusses the treatment of cubital tunnel syndrome, including the importance of patient education, activity modification, night positioning, addressing proximal and soft-tissue components, and neural mobility.
