Over the years, the Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) has gained importance and use for clinicians who assess oropharyngeal dysphagia. Many consider FEES to be another gold standard when compared to video fluoroscopy because of its unique and sensitive findings. The best practice is to have both tools so that the one best suited for a particular patient can be utilized. In this course, Dr. Susan Langmore, who developed FEES, will present an overview of the procedure and its salient findings, enhanced by many video clips illustrating swallowing abnormalities. Two speech-language pathology colleagues of Dr. Langmore will share their histories of adding FEES to their practice. This course is aimed at SLPs who are new to clinical practice as well as those SLPs who have used fluoroscopy for years and are now contemplating adding FEES.

1. The History and Evolution of FEES
A brief overview is presented of the evolution of FEES since its inception in 1988. Knowing the history puts FEES in perspective by appreciating its fledgling start to its place today as another gold standard.
2. How Adding FEES Enhances Your Practice
Three major reasons for adding FEES in comparison to using only video fluoroscopy are discussed: logistic reasons to favor FEES, clinical indications for choosing FEES, and financial advantages of FEES. Interviews are conducted with two speech-language pathologists who started FEES after years of using only fluoroscopy.
3. Best Practice Includes Both Fluoroscopy and FEES
After unique findings of FEES and fluoroscopy are listed, examples of patients who illustrate salient and unique findings of FEES will be presented in a series of video clips. A case study will be shown where FEES guided treatment. The two SLPs will be interviewed again for their current experiences with FEES.
