The purpose of this course, with Dr. Stephanie Daniels, is to facilitate knowledge concerning the importance of swallowing screening in patients admitted with suspected stroke. The goal of swallowing screening will be reviewed, and a distinction made between screening and the clinical swallowing evaluation. Important attributes of a swallowing screening tool will identified, and methods to evaluate the current literature will be described and demonstrated through a patient case example.

Stephanie Daniels

Dr. Daniels received her Ph.D. from Louisiana State University. She is a research speech pathologist at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. Dr. Daniels is a Board Recognized Specialist in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders. Her research, funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs, is focused on neurogenic dysphagia.…

1. Background on Screening in Stroke

The first chapter of this course will introduce the rationale for dysphagia screening in patients with suspected stroke, and distinguishes the information gathered during screening from the information gathered during a clinical swallowing evaluation.
