Wound issues, including both surgical wounds and pressure wounds, are frequently encountered in the rehabilitation setting. Many rehabilitation patients are at higher risk for skin breakdown and injury. This course will review the special risks for skin breakdown in rehabilitation, wound healing theory, and risk assessment. Wound care, with a special focus on wound assessment and documentation, will be emphasized.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Skin and Wounds: Anatomy, Physiology, and Healing
This chapter reviews normal anatomy of the skin and the abnormal anatomy of wounds. Wound healing theory and the effects of internal and external influences on healing and function are discussed.
2. Special Risks in Rehabilitation
This chapter reviews risks for skin breakdown specific to the rehabilitation setting and identifies specific diagnoses that put the rehabilitation patient at higher-than-normal risk for skin breakdown.
3. Risk Assessment and Prevention of Skin Breakdown
This chapter reviews risk assessment and preventive interventions for skin breakdown. Two valid and reliable tools for risk assessment are explained, with an emphasis on prevention of tissue injury.
4. Care of Wounds From Documentation to Dressings
This chapter reviews care of the wounds encountered in the rehabilitation setting, including a focus on documentation and legal liability. Assessment of wounds, appropriate documentation, pain management, and wound care products are explained, with an emphasis on engaging the learner in application of knowledge.
