Older adults in special populations face age-related comorbidities, social circumstances, and contexts that make evaluation and treatment unique. Specifically, older adults with acute or chronic conditions such as amputation, mental health disorders, or COVID-19 have special needs that require highlighting for professionals working in rehabilitation, including OTs, PTs, SLPs, and nurses. Surveys indicate that clinicians feel uncomfortable with these populations due to lack of education and experience. To assist, we will identify best practice for evaluation and treatment of older adults in these special populations across inpatient and outpatient treatment settings, as well as in restricted environments. Clinicians will be able to formulate treatment plans based on evidence and practical clinical strategies determined by treatment context.

1. Association Between Psychological Well-Being and ADLs in Older Adults
In this chapter, we review the overwhelming connection between ADL/IADL performance and predictors of psychological well-being. Psychological well-being will be examined through quality of life, mood, and life satisfaction.
2. Unique Comorbidities, Social Circumstances, and Contexts in Older Adults
In this chapter, we will provide updates on unique older adult comorbidities, such as sensory loss and loneliness. We will discuss ADL modifications in the context of these issues, as well as special circumstances in restricted environments.
3. ADLs in Older Adults With Amputation
Older adults with acute or chronic amputation face unique challenges in rehabilitation. We will discuss ADL modification in the context of changes in skin, muscle strength, balance, and cognition.
4. ADLs in Older Adults With Mental Health Diagnoses
Older adults may be managing acute or chronic mental health issues. In this chapter, we identify strategies for neuropsychiatric issues, which can interfere with ADL/IADL independence.
5. ADLs in Older Adults With COVID-19
Older adults with COVID-19 display physical, cognitive, and psychological symptoms, both in the short- and long-term. In this chapter, we reveal critical areas of assessment and extrapolate best practice for intervention through current literature.
