Spirometry is a clinical tool used to assess, diagnose, monitor, and characterize the degree of abnormality of lung function. It can be performed in a variety of clinical settings and for a variety of clinical reasons. However, in order to achieve accurate and reliable results, the operator must learn the essential skills required to elicit an acceptable test. Operators may come from a variety of healthcare professions, including respiratory therapy, nursing, physical therapy, medical assisting, and many others. Part 1 will address the clinical indications for using this clinical tool, the basic values obtained, and the calibration of the instrument prior to testing the subject. It includes, through demonstration, the key elements needed to assure the device is operating properly.
