Chapters & learning objectives
1. Characteristics of Adult Learners
Teachable moments occur with nearly every physical therapy encounter. Understanding the process of learning and behavior change tailored to adults and geriatric clients can make strategies more customized to individual needs.
2. Factors Influencing Performance of Learning Tasks
Numerous intrinsic and extrinsic factors may affect your patient’s ability to comprehend and apply new knowledge or skills to manage their health and function differently. The clinician should be versatile in customizing teaching methodology to best meet the needs of the patient.
3. Meeting the Educational Needs of Older Adults in Physical Therapy care
As the clinician, you must take responsibility for adapting elements of patient care delivery including patient education, to achieve optimal outcomes of compliance and sustainability for learning. Strategies to address the needs of older adult learners will be presented in this chapter.
