Ashley Poole

Ashley Poole, PT, DPT, holds a full-time faculty appointment in the Doctor of Physical Therapy division at Duke University. She has more than 20 years of clinical practice experience and was awarded board certification as a cardiovascular and pulmonary clinical specialist by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties in 2013. She teaches courses on complex patient management, as well as cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy, and has been an invited speaker at multiple national and regional conferences. She also serves as the assistant director of clinical education at Duke. Related to this role, she is an American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) advanced credentialed clinical instructor and an APTA credentialed clinical trainer of the CCIP Level 1 course. She received the Outstanding Clinical Educator of the Year award for her excellence in clinical teaching. She maintains her clinical practice in acute care and has a passion for critically ill patients.

Dr. Poole’s professional service extends both locally and nationally. She has served in multiple roles in the American Physical Therapy Association. In her state chapter, she is currently a chapter delegate and serves on the nominating committee. Nationally, she has served on the APTA Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Specialty Council, as secretary/treasurer for the Academic Faculty Special Interest Group in the Academy of Physical Therapy Education, and on the leadership committee of the joint task force that authored the Adult Vital Sign Interpretation in Acute Care Guide. Dr. Poole’s research is focused on optimizing function for patients with cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions, promoting early mobilization for hospitalized patients, and improving clinical education experiences for physical therapy students and clinical instructors. She completed the Duke AHEAD Certificate Program in Health Professions Education and Teaching and was selected as a fellow in Duke’s Teaching for Equity fellowship program. She was also extremely honored to be selected by the APTA as one of their centennial scholars.
