Carolyn McManus is a highly skilled clinician, researcher, and professional trainer and is a national leader in the integration of mindfulness into healthcare. She is the past president of the APTA Academy of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Pain Special Interest Group. She holds master’s degrees in physical therapy and in psychology. Since 1985, she has integrated mindful awareness principles and practices into the care of patients with chronic conditions. In 1998, she joined the Outpatient Rehabilitation Department at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, where she established their popular mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) course. She has more than 30 years of experience in the practice of mindfulness meditation and has completed an advanced MBSR teacher training program offered at the University of Massachusetts Memorial Center for Mindfulness. In addition to providing individual patient care, she served on a research team at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System in Seattle from 2008 to 2019, providing MBSR and kindness meditation courses based on research examining the effects of these practices in veteran populations with a wide range of medical conditions. Carolyn is passionate about sharing her experience and expertise with colleagues, and she provides individual and small group mentoring to clinicians. In addition, she presents regularly at state and national conferences, including APTA’s NEXT Conference and Combined Sections Meeting.
