Edie R. Hapner

Edie R. Hapner is professor of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, codirector of the UAB Voice Center, and director of speech and hearing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Among her honors, Dr. Hapner was named the George W. Barber Jr., Foundation Endowed Professor in 2021, ASHA Fellow in 2019, Associate Fellow of the American Laryngological Association, and Distinguished Fellow of the National Academies of Practice. Dr. Hapner has also received the GSHA's Clinician of the Year, The University of Missouri's Education Program Alumnae of the Year, and the Clinical Scholar designation of the AAO-HNS.
Dr. Hapner served on the ASHA Board of Directors from 2014 to 2016. She was the ASHA Convention cochair in 2020 and will serve in that position again for the ASHA Convention in 2022. She is a member of the Voice Committee of the International Association of Logopedics and Phoniatrics, and she served on the Coordinating Committee of Special Interest Group 3, Voice and Voice Disorders from 2006 to 2013. Dr. Hapner is an ASHA-appointed member of the National Advisory Committee to the Educational Testing Service. She served as the ASHA-appointed member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology's committee for the development of evidence-based guidelines for the treatment of dysphonia.
Dr. Hapner has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed articles and six book chapters on voice and voice disorders, and she is the coeditor of Voice Therapy: Clinical Case Studies. She is the author of Training and Interpretation of FEES in Adults, a DVD training program for clinicians. She is the codeveloper of phonation resistance training exercises, PhoRTE, a systematic program of respiratory and phonatory overload to treat the aging voice. Dr. Hapner is the co-planner for the Voice Therapy Conference, the only conference dedicated solely to assessment and treatment of voice disorders by speech-language pathologists.
Dr. Hapner has served as a consultant to MedBridge since 2013, and in addition to being an instructor of multiple courses, she is the developer of the upcoming Voice Certificate for MedBridge.
