James Smith

PT, DPT

James Smith, PT, DPT, is a professor of physical therapy at Utica College. Prior to that, much of his career had been in hospital-based practice. His service to the profession included president, Education Committee chair, Nominating Committee chair, and Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee chair in APTA-Acute Care; treasurer, director, and Public Relations Committee chair in the Connecticut Physical Therapy Association; Nominating Committee chair and delegate for the New York Physical Therapy Association (NYPTA); and the Awards Committee chair and member of several committees for the American Physical Therapy Association. Additionally, he has been a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine and of APTA-Acute Care, Neurology, Geriatrics, and Education. He has served on National Quality Forum’s Patient Safety - Complications Steering Committee and on CMS’s Technical Expert Panel on Functional Outcome Quality Measures for Long-Term Care Hospitals.

Dr. Smith has received APTA’s Lucy Blair Service Award and the FA Davis Award for Outstanding Physical Therapist Assistant Educator, NYPTA’s Dr. Marilyn Moffat Distinguished Service Award, and AACPT’s James Dunleavy Distinguished Service Award and Lecture Award. His scholarship includes 18 peer-reviewed publications and 30 professional publications, such as book chapters and invited work, and he has made more than 90 presentations at physical therapy and scientific conferences and workshops.
