Yoga is an ancient practice that has been used for centuries to help people balance their mind and body. Over the last few decades, research studies have shown the benefits of incorporating yoga into healthcare practices. This course will introduce the history and background of yoga and demystify misconceptions of yoga. The general benefits of practice and the application of yoga principles to populations with communication disorders with be outlined. Specific yoga protocols for all populations will be introduced and practiced, with emphasis on options and modifications for all abilities. Examples of how yoga can be incorporated into specific populations' treatment will be highlighted.

  • Outline the purpose and benefits of breath and physical postures
  • List the basic tenets of mindfulness
  • Recall the outcomes of research incorporating yoga with various populations, with emphasis on speech-language disorders
  • Identify basic yoga strategies and exercises
  • Examine ways to incorporate yoga exercises and strategies into the populations of interest for learners

Dr. Adam Lloyd is a clinical assistant professor and deputy chief of speech pathology in the Department of Otolaryngology and assistant professor of vocal performance in the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. 1. Background and History of Yoga

This chapter will focus on the history and background of yoga and its practice. The general benefits of yoga practice will be examined.

2. Supportive Research in Healthcare and Speech-Language Pathology

This chapter will focus on current evidence in healthcare using yoga practices with a wide range of populations. We will then focus more narrowly on the field of speech-language pathology and the evidence to support incorporating yoga to clinical practice.

3. Application of Yoga Practices

This chapter will focus on physical demonstrations of yoga strategies and exercises that can be applied to a wide range of populations. Next, we will focus on examples of how yoga has been used in specific populations.
