Chapters & learning objectives
1. Speech and Voice Assessment
In this chapter, participants will delve into the assessment of speech and voice in individuals with movement disorders. Through a comprehensive exploration of assessment tools and techniques, participants will learn to evaluate speech intelligibility, articulation, voice quality, and prosody in individuals affected by conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, dystonia, and Huntington’s disease. By gaining proficiency in speech assessment, participants will be better equipped to develop targeted interventions to improve communication outcomes for their clients.
2. Swallowing Assessment
Swallowing difficulties are common in individuals with movement disorders and can significantly impact their quality of life. This chapter focuses on the assessment of swallowing function in this population. Participants will learn about clinical swallowing evaluations, instrumental assessments such as videofluoroscopy and fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES), and the use of standardized swallowing assessment tools. Through case studies and interactive discussions, participants will enhance their understanding of swallowing difficulties in movement disorders and develop skills in identifying and managing dysphagia.
3. Cognitive-Communication Assessment
Cognitive impairment is a frequent comorbidity in individuals with movement disorders and can pose significant challenges in rehabilitation. In this chapter, participants will explore the assessment of cognitive function in individuals affected by movement disorders, including attention, memory, executive function, and visuospatial skills. Participants will learn about standardized cognitive assessment tools and techniques for evaluating cognitive deficits. Through case-based learning and practical exercises, participants will gain insight into the cognitive profiles associated with different movement disorders and develop strategies for addressing cognitive impairment in rehabilitation settings.
