Chapters & learning objectives

1. Treatment Indications and Guidelines

This chapter will describe the indications for conservative treatment of scoliosis. Guidelines for level of care will be described using published references from international organizations dedicated to the treatment of AIS. Level of care related to risk of progression and additional clinical and demographic variables will be discussed. Case examples will be shared to give the reader a good entry level introduction to understanding level of care for patients with AIS

2. Goals of Conservative Management of AIS

This chapter will reference published references on the goals for conservative management of AIS in order for the reader to gain an understanding of the intended benefits of physical therapy and bracing for AIS. Goals are based upon the knowledge that there is a flexible, postural component of scoliosis that can be influenced by exercise, positioning, and bracing. Various cases will be described with an explanation of how to set goals related to individual aspects of each patient.

3. Literature References on Outcomes of Bracing and Therapy

Although continued research is needed to support the outcomes for conservative treatment of scoliosis, there is a growing body of encouraging evidence that shows the benefits of therapy and bracing. This chapter will describe recommendations for scoliosis research design, review recent articles related to conservative management outcome, and share research review from the 2016 SOSORT meeting.
