Muscles undergo several physiologic changes with normal aging. There are also many older adults who suffer from sarcopenia. Unfortunately, this condition is rarely addressed as a primary impairment. This course is designed to give the learner a thorough understanding of sarcopenia, as well as other factors that can affect muscle performance during the aging process. The causes and effects of sarcopenia will be discussed, and the pathophysiology will be reviewed. Current literature will be presented regarding interventions for sarcopenia. At the end of this course, the learner will have an improved understanding of impaired muscle performance and be more effective treating older patients.

Chapters & learning objectives

Sarcopenia

1. Sarcopenia

It is important for practitioners to realize that many of their older patients may have sarcopenia. This chapter will give background information and an overview of sarcopenia, including the incidence, prevalence, and diagnosis of sarcopenia. The local effects of sarcopenia will also be introduced.

Pathophysiology of Sarcopenia

2. Pathophysiology of Sarcopenia

This chapter will emphasize the the pathophysiology of sarcopenia. This is important to understand in order to create a more individualized intervention plan for older adult patients.

Clinical Implications of Sarcopenia

3. Clinical Implications of Sarcopenia

This chapter will describe the clinical implications seen in persons with sarcopenia, including appropriate tests and measures for this population. It is important for practitioners to determine the extent of impairment, risk for adverse events, and outcome measures for justification of treatment.

Other Factors Affecting Muscle Performance

4. Other Factors Affecting Muscle Performance

This chapter will discuss other factors that affect muscle performance in an older adult population. It is important to understand the possible causes of impaired muscle performance to provide the most effective interventions.

Evidence-Based Interventions

5. Evidence-Based Interventions

This chapter discusses the current literature regarding interventions and prognosis for sarcopenia. It is important for practitioners who work with older patients to prescribe interventions appropriately. It is also vital to understand possible comorbidities associated with sarcopenia.
