The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (2018) reports that in the United States, 75 percent of men and more than 60 percent of women can be classified as overweight or obese, as can nearly 30 percent of youth under age twenty. The high prevalence of these conditions and related comorbidities has serious individual and societal costs, impacting quality of life, morbidity, mortality, and financial well-being. While the etiology of overweight and obesity is multifactorial and complex and continues to be researched, these facts are often overlooked; instead, affected children and adults are many times blamed for their disease and are subject to damaging overweight and obesity bias. Treatment modalities for overweight and obesity currently available include lifestyle modification, pharmacologic options, and metabolic/bariatric surgical interventions. Regardless of the chosen modality, interactions and care must be provided in a physically and psychologically safe manner. This course will provide an overview of overweight and obesity, with a focus on providing optimal care for persons afflicted with this disease. This course is appropriate for all health care providers working in all settings caring for individuals with overweight and obesity.

Chapters & learning objectives

Overweight and Obesity: Scope of the Problem

1. Overweight and Obesity: Scope of the Problem

Obesity is a complex disease impacting the emotional, psychological, and physical health of nearly one-third of Americans. Knowledge of contributors to overweight and obesity, as well as factors impacting the care of affected individuals, is essential for providing effective care. This chapter will provide an introduction to the scope of this disease state as well as contributing factors, comorbidities, weight bias, current treatment options, and considerations in bariatric care.

Sensitive Care

2. Sensitive Care

Weight bias, also referred to as obesity bias, is a well-documented phenomenon affecting individuals with overweight and obesity. This chapter will explore weight bias including the scope of the problem, its manifestations, and its effect on care being provided and on the health and well-being of individuals with overweight and obesity. Identification of weight bias and an overview of interventions for avoiding weight bias when interacting with individuals will be discussed. A case study will allow learners to analyze an encounter and apply principles of sensitive care to persons with overweight and obesity.

Management of Bariatric Care

3. Management of Bariatric Care

Lifestyle interventions, the prescribing of weight loss pharmaceuticals, and performance of metabolic/bariatric surgery are current methods for addressing overweight and obesity. This chapter will provide an overview of these treatment modalities, including their efficacy, advantages and disadvantages, and concerns and considerations associated with each modality. A case study is included, allowing learners to synthesize information presented in this chapter.
