Once the clinical swallow evaluation has been completed, a clinician is sometimes left with a number of questions to answer regarding how to best manage an individual’s dysphagia. Commonly recommended strategies include diet modifications, non-oral feeding, exercise, and compensations. The individual’s underlying medical issues often complicate the path forward, and the “safest” option is not always clear. This course will assist the clinician in making post-evaluation recommendations through discussion of the risks and benefits of specific interventions, including the use of thickened liquids and non-oral feeding. A review of the evidence to assist clinicians in determining if their patient is in need of instrumental assessment, or is a candidate for exercise or compensations will be provided. Decision-making at end of life will also be discussed.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Thickened Liquids and Diet Modifications
The participant will discuss the risks and benefits of use of thickened liquids in dysphagia management, identify two to three characteristics of patients who would be good candidates for a water protocol, and determine candidacy for non-oral feeding in a patient with dysphagia.
2. Instrumental Assessment, Medical Administration, and the Effectiveness of Exercise
The participant will differentiate between endoscopic and fluoroscopic instrumental assessment functions in assessment of pharyngeal swallow components, discuss medication formulations and their impact on swallowing, and identify characteristics of an effective exercise program.
3. Palliative Care and End of Life Issues
The participant will discuss the role of the SLP in management of the end of life patient, and discuss the effectiveness of non-oral feeding in the end of life patient and identify alternative means of addressing feeding and comfort.
4. Case Studies
Demonstrate principles and techniques from lecture with two real world case studies.
