Chapters & learning objectives
1. Pulmonary Function Tests
Pulmonary function tests available clinically or in inpatient settings are vitally important to consider during assessment for dysphagia. In the first chapter of this course, Deanna Britton provides in depth descriptions of available pulmonary function measures, including the research literature supporting their use.
2. Paradoxical Breathing Patterns and Flow Volume loops
In the second chapter of this course, participants will be shown how data available from pulmonary function tests is relevant to dysphagia assessment as a part of the medical records review, and when considering the effect of pulmonary function on swallowing function.
3. Measurement of Cough
Measurement of cough is an important aspect of pulmonary function testing. This chapter provides an overview of the measurement and interpretation of cough force and overall function as a reflexive and volitional pulmonary defense mechanism.
4. Lab Section
In this section, the participant will review a patient case study that includes demonstrations clinically applicable pulmonary function tests.
5. Question and Answer
In this chapter, Dr. Britton fields questions form Dr. Robert Miller that cover the entire Dysphagia and Pulmonary Function series, including future research directions, and commonly asked questions.
