This is the first part of a two-part course series. Clinicians will learn medical history and clinical presentation of distinctly different patients who present with dysphagia in the NICU/neonatal period. They will learn from an experienced clinician how to pinpoint items in the history and clinical examination to guide their evaluation and questions for the medical team. Evidence-based therapeutic interventions appropriate to each patient’s course and diagnosis will be discussed. In part 1, diagnoses of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy and bronchopulmonary dysplasia will be presented. Clinicians working in the NICU or doing follow-up for NICU graduates will find this course applicable.

Chapters & learning objectives

Patient 1

1. Patient 1

Clinicians will learn background information on medical evaluation and criteria for therapeutic hypothermia in the context of neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), and the pathophysiology of dysphagia in patients with this diagnosis. A hypothetical patient’s medical course, initial presentation, therapeutic interventions, patient responses, and outcome are presented as a framework to discuss typical presentation of patients with moderate HIE.

Patient 2

2. Patient 2

Clinicians will learn medical risk factors for bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and the pathophysiology of dysphagia in patients with this diagnosis. A hypothetical patient's medical course, initial presentation, therapeutic interventions, patient responses, and outcome are presented as a framework to discuss typical presentation of patients with BPD.
