1. Background and Definition
Instructor Dr. Michael Crary presents the Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS). The FOIS is a clinical scale to easily document and communicate a patient’s safe and adequate functional oral intake. In this chapter, Dr. Michael Crary defines the seven levels of the FOIS.
2. Clinical Application of the FOIS
In the second chapter of this course, Dr. Crary uses case studies and a live demonstration with a patient to provide the tools necessary to accurately assess a patient’s FOIS level. Participants will be able to discuss caveats with FOIS interpretation and strategies to revolve any confusion in interpretation.
3. Frequently Asked Questions and Discussion
In the final chapter, Dr. Crary discusses frequently asked questions from clinicians, and assigns FOIS scores to case studies. He is also joined by speech-language pathologist Dr. Robert Miller in a question and answer session to discuss the implementation and interpretation of FOIS data.
