This course will address the specific referral and evaluation of injured workers presenting with mild traumatic head injury. The workers’ compensation population presents us with a unique opportunity to promote collaboration with medical clinicians to identify workers who are appropriate for therapy intervention and to create a pathway to provide early physical therapy for clinical management. Evaluation of workers with concussion includes a comprehensive review of the cervical spine, vestibulo-oculomotor function, positional vestibular function, balance/motor function, and aerobic capacity. This course will provide the therapist with knowledge in performing an evaluation of this patient population and increase their comfort level in communicating with medical clinicians to allow for appropriate collaboration in determining a plan for return to work.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Referral Indicators and Patient Screening
This chapter will discuss the incidence of concussion in the workers’ compensation population and the role of clinical collaboration to promote early therapy referral. We will explore current evidence-based practice supporting the early return to activity. Additionally, we will review appropriate patient screening and identification of any flags in patient presentation to discuss with the medical clinician.
2. Postconcussion Syndrome Evaluation
In this chapter, we will review the components of a comprehensive evaluation of workers with concussion. Evaluation will include assessment of the cervical spine, examination of the vestibular and oculomotor system, and addressing balance and motor function.
3. Transition to Plan of Care
This chapter will provide insight to synthesizing your evaluation and integrating it in your therapy plan of care. Additionally, we will cover the role of effective collaboration with the medical clinician as we develop a return-to-work plan for the injured worker.
