In 2016, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) working group on Instrumental Voice Assessment Protocol (IVAP) completed their recommendation of the minimum voice evaluation instrumental methods and measures to be completed during a standard voice evaluation. These recommendations included methods for completing acoustic and aerodynamic measures typically coded as Laryngeal Function Studies (CPT 92520).The focus of this course is to provide a summary of the ASHA IVAP recommended instrumental laryngeal function studies methods and measures. In addition, low tech approaches for conducting acoustic and aerodynamic measures will be presented for those clinicians without access to high tech equipment.

Chapters & learning objectives

Acoustic Measures

1. Acoustic Measures

This chapter will introduce the goals of completing acoustic measures as a component of laryngeal function studies (CPT 92520). Completion of only acoustic measures can be coded to indicate partial completion of laryngeal function studies during a voice evaluation (CPT 92520-52).

Aerodynamic Measures

2. Aerodynamic Measures

The purpose of this chapter is to introduce the goals of completing aerodynamic measures as a component of laryngeal function studies (CPT 92520). Completion of only aerodynamic measures can be coded to indicate partial completion of laryngeal function studies during a voice evaluation (CPT 92520-52).
