Chapters & learning objectives
1. Addressing Swallowing and Feeding in the School Setting: IDEA and Educational Relevance
We'll start out by identifying the role that the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act plays in determining educational relevance for addressing swallowing and feeding in the school setting and setting federal requirements. Information on the legal and ethical issues surrounding this topic will be discussed. This chapter will also review legal and ethical considerations when addressing swallowing and feeding in the school setting. SLPs, OTs and school nurses are all bound by their profession’s Code of Ethics. Those guidelines that apply will be discussed.
2. A System-Supported Procedure for Addressing Swallowing and Feeding in the School Setting
This chapter will outline the importance of school districts adopting a system-supported procedure for addressing swallowing and feeding and the steps required to establish it. A system-wide procedure ensures that districts have considered all the necessary steps and are addressing the student’s safety using a team approach.
3. Roles and Responsibilities of Swallowing and Feeding Team Members
This chapter will identify school-based team members and discuss the typical roles and responsibilities of each member. It is essential that everyone who works with students with swallowing and feeding disorders is aware of their part in ensuring the safety of these children during mealtimes.
