This course is designed to help the physical therapist improve competence and confidence in the management of pediatric and adolescent musculoskeletal neck pain. Pediatric and adolescent neck pain is a common condition that physical therapists manage either in orthopedic or pediatric settings. While there are similarities with the adult population for the management of neck pain, there are nuances specific to the pediatric and adolescent population that will be unpacked in this course. This course will focus on the examination and assessment of pediatric and adolescent neck pain. Furthermore, both clinical practice guidelines and treatment-based classifications will be discussed despite the limited focus on pediatric or adolescent populations typically included in the literature.

Implementing Guidelines for the Management of Pediatric and Adolescent Neck Pain

1. Implementing Guidelines for the Management of Pediatric and Adolescent Neck Pain

This chapter will introduce the appropriate clinical practice guidelines and valid use for the management of neck pain, and when possible, specific to the pediatric and adolescent population. This course will also introduce the limitations to using a guideline-based approach, especially when pulling from adult population resources. However, these guidelines will be utilized as a framework for the management of pediatric and adolescent neck pain.

Classification of Neck Pain: Consistencies and Inconsistencies

2. Classification of Neck Pain: Consistencies and Inconsistencies

This chapter will provide background and detailed information about classification approaches to the management of neck pain. Moreover, this course will identify the inconsistencies with recommendations in published guidelines, as well as consistencies and inconsistencies between adult neck pain management and pediatric/adolescent neck pain management.

Performing a Guideline-Informed Cervical Evaluation for Pediatric and Adolescent Neck Pain

3. Performing a Guideline-Informed Cervical Evaluation for Pediatric and Adolescent Neck Pain

Clinical practice guideline recommendations will be incorporated as the framework for instruction of cervical examination and evaluation. The International Federation of Manual Physical Therapists will also be used for screening and examination instruction. This chapter will provide specific instruction on the examination and evaluation of pediatric/adolescent neck pain, including using the findings to determine the best management strategies.
