This course seeks to fill a knowledge gap in the advanced instruction of head and neck cancer (HNC) management. This lecture will identify current surgical treatment options for HNC patients to improve early and long-term outcomes and overall survival. Specifically, this course provides instruction on the impact of surgery and reconstruction on communication and swallowing in head and neck cancer patients post surgery. This discussion includes the anatomy and physiology of HNC, as well as tumor classification, cancer staging, and factors influencing reconstruction options in HNC. This course includes an interview with a head and neck surgeon, Dr. Farzad Masroor, who discusses reconstruction options, the decision-making process on flap selection based on tumor location, the extent of surgery, patient factors, the impact on swallowing, and survival outcomes.

Head and Neck Cancer: Diagnosis and Treatment Planning

1. Head and Neck Cancer: Diagnosis and Treatment Planning

Chapter 1 discusses head and neck cancer (HNC) treatment planning based on the pretreatment diagnostic workup. Key points on the progression of HNC from diagnosis to treatment are presented in this chapter.

Surgical and Reconstructive Options in Head and Neck Cancer

2. Surgical and Reconstructive Options in Head and Neck Cancer

Chapter 2 identifies current surgical approaches and reconstruction options appropriate in the management of HNC. Details on the reconstructive ladder and critical factors, including head and neck treatment guidelines and prognostic indicators, are identified.

Impact on Swallowing for Patients Undergoing Surgical and Reconstructive Management

3. Impact on Swallowing for Patients Undergoing Surgical and Reconstructive Management

Chapter 3 focuses on the impact of surgery on swallowing function for patients undergoing surgical and reconstructive management of head and neck cancer. Current surgical approaches and reconstruction options for the management of HNC are discussed, as are the goals of surgical management of HNC and the swallow function post surgery based on tumor location, extent of surgery, and type of flap.

Perspectives and Expertise of a Head and Neck Surgeon: Farzad Masroor, MD

4. Perspectives and Expertise of a Head and Neck Surgeon: Farzad Masroor, MD

Dr. Farzad Masroor is interviewed to present his perspectives on current surgical practices and advancements in head and neck cancer treatment. Dr. Masroor discusses his decisions on flap selection, postoperative flap healing, and consideration of HNC treatment impact on swallow function.
