Chapters & learning objectives
1. Social/Communication-Based Behaviors: Overview
This chapter reviews the Intervention for Challenging Behavior (ICB) form and distinguishes the social and communication functions of behavior. We will review obtaining and avoiding communication-based behaviors and discuss those individuals at high risk. This will help clinicians understand the underlying behavioral issues and design targeted interventions.
2. Social/Communication Based Behaviors: Avoidance Behaviors
This chapter looks at social/communication-based avoidance behaviors and distinguishes between attention based behaviors and those aimed at avoiding a task, object or activity. The causes for task avoidance will be studied in depth and a strategy for analyzing and differentiating will be reviewed. This chapter gives the professional a foundation for implementing a targeted intervention program.
3. Social/Communication-Based Behaviors: Obtaining Behaviors
This chapter looks at social/communication-based obtaining behaviors and distinguishes between attention based behaviors (positive and negative) and those aimed at obtaining a task, object, or activity. This chapter gives the professional a foundation for implementing a targeted intervention program and provides a guideline for improving communication and altering behavior.
