Fractures of the hand and digits compose the highest incidence of upper extremity fractures, and account for 21% of all workplace hand injuries. These injuries can result in significant functional loss due to residual stiffness and pain.

This course examines medical and surgical management as well as therapy strategies to protect, mobilize, and optimize functional outcomes. Therapeutic interventions through each of the phases of healing are demonstrated, as well as the use of orthoses to facilitate healing and restore digital motion and functional use.

This course is applicable to occupational and physical therapists working in outpatient and inpatient settings, with patients with hand and digital fractures in all phases of treatment, as well as to therapists looking for intervention and orthosis strategies to maximize outcomes.

Chapters & learning objectives

Acute Fracture Healing and Management

1. Acute Fracture Healing and Management

This chapter examines the process of fracture healing and acute management of hand and digital fractures. Discussion includes conservative and operative indications and techniques as well as orthosis protection considerations to facilitate fracture healing and prevent complication.

Therapy Management of Hand Fractures

2. Therapy Management of Hand Fractures

This chapter discusses specific therapy interventions for the treatment of hand and digital fractures. Examples of interventions to safely restore motion based on healing stage and tissue tolerance are emphasized. Strategies are provided for the management of typical residual symptoms such as loss of motion and hypersensitivity.

Orthoses and Strategies to Resolve Residual Stiffness

3. Orthoses and Strategies to Resolve Residual Stiffness

This chapter includes specific orthosis fabrication techniques to resolve motion loss due to intrinsic tightness, joint stiffness, and extrinsic tightness. Specific orthoses to address each cause of motion deficits are demonstrated.
