Chapters & learning objectives
1. Tissue Balance and Edema Formation Following Trauma
Normal tissue fluid homeostasis and the acute response of the tissue to injury will be discussed. The impact of chronic inflammatory changes on structures of microcirculation if edema persists will also be described.
2. Overview of Edema Management Techniques
In order to best manage orthopedic edema, attention should be paid to both the fluid component and the protein component of the total edema volume. The physiologic rationale of various treatment techniques will be introduced, and their impact on various components of tissue physiology will be discussed. Special attention will be given to manual edema resorption techniques.
3. Evaluation of Orthopedic Edemas: Impact on Treatment Choices
Components of an orthopedic edema assessment will be described. Considering the time since injury and how the injured area presents, including the amount of edema and type of tissue texture changes, contribute to the effective timing of treatment choices.
