In this course, participants will be instructed in how to develop a customized program that is based on scientific principles and current evidence of injury prevention and management. This course will review the unique risk factors facing musicians, and common causes of upper extremity musculoskeletal injury. We will review assessment methods to correctly identify faulty movement patterns, poor practice habits, and demonstrate how to use movement and functional analysis to identify the source of the problem and develop customized recommendations for a range of instruments and conditions. We will discuss methods to optimize musculoskeletal health and improve performance. We will address instrument-specific ergonomic requirements and learn how to select the correct exercises and rehabilitation strategies to prevent and manage common injuries in musicians and guide safe return to play.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Common Causes of Upper Extremity Injury in Instrumentalists
This chapter will review the evidence surrounding common musculoskeletal risk factors associated with performance-related musculoskeletal disorders in musicians, and the positive role and health benefits of injury prevention education and management.
2. Assessment
This chapter will provide a comprehensive approach to the assessment of performance-related musculoskeletal injuries in musicians. We will discuss how to conduct a relevant medical and performance history and how to conduct a musculoskeletal exam that is specific to the player and performance demands, including using video analysis to assess performance biomechanics and playing position.
3. Musician Injury Prevention
This chapter will focus on the application of music health and injury prevention principles to incorporate into education and wellness programs. We will review recommendations and guidelines for general music health, warming up, pacing, and smart practice habits. We will discuss stretches and strengthening exercises that are specific to the instrument and performance. We will discuss how to correct posture and playing position, and how to make modifications to the instrument when indicated.
4. Musician Injury Management
In this chapter, we will address common musculoskeletal injuries in musicians. We will discuss how to address postural asymmetry and imbalance. We will review orthotic and taping techniques for common musician injuries. We will address and discuss the factors and challenges in managing expectations and safe return to performance and competition.
