This course will offer an introduction to manual edema mobilization, which is a recognized best-practice treatment for individuals with persistent upper extremity edema following trauma. The course will offer foundational knowledge (the impact of edema and normal physiology) as well as practice knowledge (how to stimulate the lymphatics) through lecture and demonstrations, as well as insights from Sandra Artzberger, the developer of manual edema mobilization.

Chapters & learning objectives

Understanding Edema

1. Understanding Edema

This chapter provides the basis for understanding edema management. The impact of edema will be reviewed, as will the different types of swelling and how edema persists. This chapter helps clinicians appreciate edema as being more than visible swelling.

Meet the Lymphatics

2. Meet the Lymphatics

This chapter provides an overview of the lymphatic system, which is responsible for maintaining fluid balance in the interstitial space. Edema management is based on a well-functioning lymphatic system.

MEM Tenets: An Introduction

3. MEM Tenets: An Introduction

This chapter combines the foundational knowledge of the previous chapters. It describes how the tenets of MEM are used to stimulate the lymphatic system and decongest high-protein edema. Traditional approaches of edema management and how they impact the lymphatic system will be challenged.

MEM in Action: Lymphatic Decongestion

4. MEM in Action: Lymphatic Decongestion

MEM key concepts will be highlighted and taught using various methods, including demonstrations and models. The effectiveness of MEM techniques will be seen in case presentations with pre and post images. The course content will highlight the importance of hand pressure and hand placement during treatment.
