In this course, Vicky Saliba Johnson works with Kristin (a patient experiencing difficulties with her core strength following an injury) and assesses her Automatic Core Engagement and alignment using the Functional Tests of Vertical Compression and Elbow Flexion Tests. The demonstration progresses from sitting training to active sitting and weight acceptance to standing alignment training. The pre and post test demonstrate the effectiveness of the motor control training.

This course is part of a six-part series with Gregg and Vicky Johnson, which is designed to provide the participant with a working understanding of the FMT system of patient care through live patient demonstrations and lectures to support the clinical reasoning behind the progression of treatment and skills used:
  • Functional Manual Therapy®: A Comprehensive Patient Management System.
  • Understanding the Interconnectivity of the Body's Connective Tissues and Articulations and Their Interdependency for Efficient Function - Live patient assessment and treatment and mechanical components of neck and low back pain by Gregory S. Johnson.
  • Neuromuscular Function: Mastering the Specificity of Manual Neuromuscular Facilitation - Live patient demonstrations for the assessment and facilitation of CoreFirst® postural and movement strategies and the integrated use of specific manual neuromuscular facilitation to address ROM, Initiation, and strength by Vicky Saliba Johnson and Gregory Johnson.
  • Motor Control: Principles of CoreFirst® Strategies for Posture and Movement - Live patient demonstration utilizing CoreFirst® strategies for posture and movement to promote an Automatic Core Engagement (ACE) by Vicky Saliba Johnson.
  • The Functional Manual Therapy® Approach to the Knee - Live patient assessment and treatment of a knee patient by Gregory S. Johnson.

Assessment

1. Assessment

Vicky Johnson continues her work with Kristin in this live patient demo. Her focus is to assess the efficiency of Kristin’s sitting and standing posture using the Vertical Compression and Elbow Flexion Tests.

Treatment and Re-assessment: Postural Sitting

2. Treatment and Re-assessment: Postural Sitting

Vicky Johnson demonstrates the training methods for teaching efficient sitting and the reassesses the efficiency of the new position using the Elbow Flexion Test.

Treatment and Re-assessment: Head and Shoulder Girdle Position

3. Treatment and Re-assessment: Head and Shoulder Girdle Position

Vicky demonstrates the use of the Elbow Flexion Test to identify the inefficiency of Kristin’s presenting head and shoulder position, the process for training and self-correction, and the reassessment to ensure the effectiveness of the new position.

Treatment and Re-assessment: Active Sitting

4. Treatment and Re-assessment: Active Sitting

Vicky demonstrates the assessment of inefficient weight acceptance, the self-reporting of symptoms by Kristin, the training of efficient weight acceptance, and the self-reporting of a reduction in symptoms by Kristin.

Treatment and Re-assessment: Postural Standing

5. Treatment and Re-assessment: Postural Standing

Vicky demonstrates the assessment of Kristin’s standing posture using the Saliba Postural Classification System. Kristin is taken through the basic steps of standing postural training and then reassessed for confirmation of efficiency with the Vertical Compression and Elbow Flexion Tests.
