In this course, Clare Frank, DPT, MS, OCS, FAAOMPT, will demonstrate the importance of a systematic & structured evaluation of posture, muscle length and movement patterns on a patient with scapular and thoracic. The course will draw relationships between the source and cause (impairments and contributing factors) responsible for creating the dysfunction. The course will cover the clinical reasoning behind each test, as well as specific dysfunctions to consider while conducting each test. Emphasis is put on providing patient education and treatment strategies that align with the patient’s daily activities.

Chapters & learning objectives

An Introduction to the Functional System

1. An Introduction to the Functional System

This chapter will describe the underlying premises of musculosekeletal system and how pain interacts with movement and muscle function. The chapter will discuss the common causes of impairments, the differences between cause and source, and how that relates to musculoskeletal pain. This chapter will also discuss the role of the sensorimotor system in coordinating stability-mobility continuum, the relationship between movement patterns and muscle balance, and the consequence of muscle imbalance.

The Upper Quarter Evaluation

2. The Upper Quarter Evaluation

This chapter will start with a patient interview to gain insight into the patient's history. The chapter will then demonstrate a structured exam from a movement system perspective, including alignment, posture, gait, functional movement and making predictions for possible impairments. Dr. Frank will confirm the impairments through careful assessment of muscle length and movement patterns.

Clinical Reasoning for Treatment Strategies

3. Clinical Reasoning for Treatment Strategies

This chapter discusses the findings from the upper quarter evaluation. The chapter discusses the source and contributing factors based on the patient presentation and provides treatment strategies.
