Part one of this four-course series will provide an introduction to pediatric voice disorders. Part one will introduce participants with an overview of normal pediatric anatomy and physiology, pediatric laryngeal development, and voice production. This section will also present information regarding the definition of voice disorders in children, the incidence and prevalence of pediatric voice disorders, and an overview of common etiologies of voice disorders. We will discuss some common misconceptions of pediatric voice disorders and treatment, and the role of the speech pathologist in the identification, evaluation, and treatment of pediatric voice disorders.

1. Pediatric Voice Disorders: Overview

This chapter will provide an introduction to pediatric voice disorders, cover the incidence and prevalence of pediatric voice disorders, the impact on quality of life, and a brief breakdown of common types of voice disorders in children.

2. Pediatric Laryngeal Anatomy, Physiology and Development

This chapter will review normal laryngeal anatomy, physiology, and pediatric laryngeal development from birth to adolescence. This will provide a foundation for understanding the vocal mechanism and how growth and development can impact evaluation and treatment of voice disorders.

3. Common Etiologies of Voice Disorders in Children

This chapter will provide a classification system for voice disorders in children, and an overview of the most commonly seen etiologies of these. This will include benign lesions, neurogenic voice disorders, and primary muscle tension.
