This course will provide a standard plan of care, including therapeutic exercise, to promote proper ambulation with a prosthesis. This course should be the most valuable of the entire series as it provides a therapeutic progression through all four phases of rehabilitation. The patient handouts will assist with home exercise programs and patient education, two key components of prosthetic rehabilitation. Understanding the progression of therapeutic exercise will provide the clinician with the appropriate skills to successfully treat any patient with an amputation.

Chapters & learning objectives

Four Phases of Prosthetic Rehabilitation

1. Four Phases of Prosthetic Rehabilitation

Understanding the four separate phases of rehabilitation will allow the therapist to determine an appropriate plan of care. The therapist can also use this tool to determine when it is appropriate to progress the patient into the next phase of rehabilitation.

Edema Control and Residual Limb Care

2. Edema Control and Residual Limb Care

Post operatively, the therapist must learn how to control the edema to promote prosthetic wear. Also, the therapist must be able to educate the patient on appropriate residual limb care to improve long term function.

Extremity Flexibility and Stretching

3. Extremity Flexibility and Stretching

Promoting a complete range of motion will improve ambulation with a prosthesis. This chapter will go over techniques to attain this goal through all four phases of rehabilitation.

Postural Strengthening

4. Postural Strengthening

Promoting postural strengthening will improve ambulation with a prosthesis. This chapter will go over techniques to attain this goal through all four phases of rehabilitation.
