This course is meant for rehabilitation professionals working with patients with restrictive lung disease and will describe the commonly seen restrictive lung diseases. Risk factors and causes will be presented, as well as explanations of how the diseases progress, including a discussion of the diagnostic testing and medical management of the diseases. In addition, determining the severity of the restrictive disease and the prognosis will help clinicians accurately select interventions and prescribe exercise safely in all practice settings. Fully understanding restrictive pulmonary diseases and their progression is often beyond entry-level education. This course will apply the pathophysiology of restrictive lung disease to a case study to demonstrate how to choose appropriate interventions.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Overview of Restrictive Lung Disease
This chapter will describe the characteristics, causes, and consequences of restrictive lung disease, including musculoskeletal, cognitive, functional mobility, and ADL deficits. This is important to help practitioners understand the dysfunction and deficits seen in patients with restrictive lung disease and for practitioners to help educate patients on disease prevention and being able to self-manage the disease.
2. The Pathophysiology and Causes of Restrictive Lung Disease
This chapter will explain the specific pathophysiology and progression of interstitial lung disease, pulmonary edema and pleural effusion, pneumonia, lung cancer, and external causes of lung dysfunction. It is important to understand the differences between the restrictive lung diseases as different interventions may be indicated for each type of restrictive lung disease.
3. Diagnostic Testing and Medical Management of Restrictive Lung Disease
This chapter will outline the various diagnostic tests used to diagnose disease and the medical interventions used to treat restrictive lung diseases. It will include instruction on how to determine the severity and prognosis of a disease. It is important to understand the severity of the restrictive disease as well as the medical management. Decisions on appropriate rehabilitation management can be made based on the severity and the medical management of the disease.
4. Physical Therapy Interventions for Restrictive Lung Disease
This chapter will present the various options for interventions for individuals with restrictive lung disease, as well as how to determine which patients would be appropriate for each intervention.
5. Restrictive Lung Disease Case Study
Information from a restrictive lung disease case study will be discussed to determine appropriate severity, prognosis, and interventions. The application of the information to a case study is important for transfer of knowledge of the didactic material.
