Chapters & learning objectives
1. Overview
This chapter provides an overview of ideal sitting posture and typical seating challenges encountered in the SNF setting and why they are problematic. There will be a discussion about what needs to be considered when assessing the patient as well as identifying classic red flags for potential seating problems.
2. Sliding Out of the Chair
This chapter will cover one of the three most common seating problems encountered in the SNF setting: sliding out of the wheelchair. Common causes of this functional challenge will be addressed, assessments presented, and solutions discussed. Incorrectly employed common solutions for this functional challenge will also be discussed.
3. Slouching, Leaning Forward in Chair, and Looking at the Ground
This chapter will cover slouching, leaning forward, and looking at the ground while in the wheelchair. Common causes of these functional challenges will be addressed, assessments presented, and solutions discussed. Incorrectly employed common solutions for these functional challenges will also be discussed.
4. Leaning Laterally: Scoliosis, Pelvic Obliquity, and Wheelchair Mobility
This chapter will cover lateral leaning, scoliosis, and pelvic obliquity. Common causes of these positioning issues will be addressed, assessments presented, and solutions discussed. Incorrectly employed common solutions for these functional challenges will also be discussed.
5. Common Myths, the Seating Mat Assessment, and Documentation Tips
This chapter will cover classic myths such as the use of extending leg rests, transfer slings, pommel cushions, and pillows. A seated mat assessment will also be demonstrated. Documentation tips will be discussed and a general summary with algorithm presented at the end.
