Chapters & learning objectives
1. Rehabilitation for the Pediatric Athlete
Surgical and nonsurgical rehabilitation for injuries will be discussed. Common treatment methods utilized in adults will vary with pediatrics, and special considerations are required to best treat these patients.
2. Strength Testing, Balance/Proprioception Testing, and Cardiovascular Function of the Pediatric Athlete
Methods of testing pediatrics and young athletes can sometimes vary from methods of testing adults. This chapter will discuss methods of testing and examination of pediatric athletes in regard to strength testing, balance/proprioception testing, and measurements in aerobic and cardiovascular function.
3. Return to Sports Testing and Injury Reduction of the Pediatric Athlete
During the later stages of rehabilitation, focus must be maintained on the best evidence-based methods for returning to sport while reducing the chances of re-injury. Injury reduction strategies will also be discussed to assist the clinician in providing the best care for their patients when bridging the gap between rehabilitation and return to sports.
