Oxygen therapy is frequently delivered to patients, both in the acute care settings and at home. There are a variety of devices to choose from, and it is important that the right device be chosen. This course will review oxygen device types so that patients receive maximum benefits without harm. Specifically, the types that will be reviewed are low-flow oxygen devices, high-flow oxygen devices (including heated high-flow nasal cannulas), and reservoir oxygen devices. Finally, requirements for home oxygen will also be discussed.
Understanding oxygen delivery devices will lead to preparedness to choose the most appropriate device. Additionally, clinicians will understand how to best use device types. This course is intended for respiratory therapists and healthcare providers who are responsible for prescribing and/or implementing oxygen therapy.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Low-Flow Oxygen Devices
Following a brief history of the evolution of oxygen therapy devices, the nasal cannula, open-design oxygen mask, and standard high-flow nasal cannula will be reviewed and demonstrated. Indications for use will be presented.
2. Reservoir Oxygen Systems
The simple mask, partial rebreather, and non-rebreather oxygen masks will be reviewed, and their use will be demonstrated. Indications for use and amount of oxygen delivered will be presented.
3. High-Flow Oxygen Devices
This chapter discusses the use of Venturi masks, trach collars, and face tents. It also discusses heated high-flow nasal cannulas and some of their reported benefits.
4. Home Oxygen
Determining the need for home oxygen, both at rest and during mobility/exertion (exercise oximetry), is imperative for safe discharge home. This chapter presents requirements that must be met and documented for a patient to qualify for home oxygen. It also presents sample documentation of the exercise oximetry process.
